Choose the right Connecticut credential

HOME IMPROVEMENT OR MAJOR CONTRACTOR?

The correct registration depends on the property, project scope, and structural thresholds—not simply the word “contractor” in your business name. STS reviews the work first and helps map the proper filing path.

What Connecticut looks for

REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS BY FILING TYPE

STS professional fees generally range from $500 to $2,000. Government charges, insurance premiums, record requests, certificates, and other third-party expenses are separate.

CT Home Improvement Contractor

Connecticut requires business and ownership information, requested disclosures, and proof of General Liability insurance meeting the state minimum. STS helps organize a complete, consistent filing.

Typical complete filing: approximately 3–5 business days

CT Major Contractor

Major Contractor registration applies to qualifying large-scale or structural work. The filing includes entity documentation and two credit references—one from the trade industry and one from a financial institution.

Timing depends on scope and agency review

Out-of-State Businesses

A legal entity may need to register with the Connecticut Secretary of the State before applying. STS reviews entity status early so an avoidable qualification issue does not hold up the contractor filing.

Entity work may affect the overall timeframe

TIMING, FEES, AND DISCLOSURE SUPPORT

Many complete CT HIC filings move in only a few business days. Major Contractor applications and filings involving missing records, entity qualification, criminal-history review, or license-suspension issues may take longer.

STS Professional Fees

Most Connecticut registration engagements range from $500 to $2,000 based on the credential, entity status, ownership, disclosures, and filing complexity.

A written proposal separates STS fees from third-party costs

Criminal History

A felony disclosure does not necessarily mean automatic denial. Accurate disclosure and complete disposition records matter, and the Department of Consumer Protection evaluates eligibility under Connecticut law.

STS can organize records; approval cannot be guaranteed

Child Support Status

Connecticut law permits suspension of professional or occupational licenses for qualifying child-support delinquency after required notice and findings. Addressing an active issue before filing can prevent surprises.

Answers before you apply

CONNECTICUT CONTRACTOR REGISTRATION QUESTIONS

WHICH CONNECTICUT REGISTRATION DO I NEED?+

The HIC registration generally covers qualifying improvements to residential properties with six or fewer units. Major Contractor registration applies to qualifying large-scale or structural construction, alteration, repair, dismantling, or demolition. STS reviews the property and project scope before recommending a filing path.

HOW MUCH DOES CONNECTICUT CONTRACTOR REGISTRATION COST?+

STS professional fees generally range from $500 to $2,000, depending on the registration type, entity status, ownership, disclosures, and filing complexity.

Government charges, insurance premiums, record requests, entity certificates, credit-reference costs, and other third-party expenses are separate and may change. STS provides a written proposal before work begins.

HOW LONG DOES CONNECTICUT REGISTRATION TAKE?+

Many complete CT Home Improvement Contractor filings are processed in approximately 3–5 business days. Timing is an estimate, not a guarantee. Major Contractor review, agency workload, entity qualification, missing records, insurance issues, criminal-history review, or an active suspension matter can extend the process.

DO I NEED GENERAL LIABILITY INSURANCE?+

Connecticut’s HIC application requires proof of General Liability insurance meeting the current state minimum. STS can help coordinate appropriate contractor coverage, subject to underwriting, eligibility, and carrier terms.

WHAT COUNTS AS A MAJOR CONTRACTOR PROJECT?+

Connecticut uses statutory building, height, span, floor-area, and occupancy thresholds. Examples include certain projects involving four or more stories, 60 feet or more in height, a 150-foot clear span, 150,000 square feet of gross floor area, or occupancy of 1,000 people. Structural roofing, masonry, or framing work on qualifying projects may also require Major Contractor registration. The Department of Consumer Protection makes the final classification and registration decision.

DO I QUALIFY IF I HAVE A CRIMINAL HISTORY?+

Connecticut applications require truthful responses to criminal-history questions. A felony disclosure does not necessarily mean automatic denial; the agency may evaluate the offense, its relationship to the credential, rehabilitation, and the supporting record under Connecticut law. Never omit requested information. STS can help organize disposition records and an accurate filing, but STS is not a law firm and cannot provide legal advice or guarantee approval.

CAN CHILD-SUPPORT DELINQUENCY AFFECT MY REGISTRATION?+

Yes. Connecticut law allows a court or family support magistrate to order suspension of a professional or occupational license for qualifying child-support delinquency after required notice and findings. Qualifying delinquency can include more than 90 days of overdue periodic payments or certain failures involving court-ordered insurance or compliance. It is not accurate to assume every past-due balance automatically causes denial. If you have an active order or suspension, address it early and provide accurate documentation.

CAN AN OUT-OF-STATE COMPANY APPLY?+

Yes, but a corporation, LLC, partnership, or other legal entity may need Connecticut Secretary of the State registration before the contractor application can move forward. STS can review entity status and help coordinate the supporting records.

DOES REGISTRATION REPLACE A TRADE LICENSE OR PERMIT?+

No. HIC or Major Contractor registration does not replace a required electrical, plumbing, HVAC, or other occupational license, and it does not replace project permits or local approvals.

DO YOU GUARANTEE APPROVAL?+

No private company can guarantee government approval. We prepare, organize, submit, and track registration applications while helping address agency requests. Final decisions are made by the applicable government agency.
