Not every fee applies to every contractor, and government fees are subject to change. STS will review your circumstances and provide a proposal separating our professional service fee from anticipated government and third-party expenses before you move forward.
A New Jersey Home Improvement Contractor Business—or HICB—registration applies to covered work on existing residential or noncommercial property and is administered through the Division of Consumer Affairs.
New Home Builder registration is a separate Department of Community Affairs program for businesses constructing new residences for sale and enrolling homes in the State's warranty program.
These registrations are not interchangeable. STS can review your scope of work, project type, and municipality to help identify the correct path.
New Jersey HICBs must maintain additional security based on contract size or prior 12-month volume. The current tiers are $10,000, $25,000, or $50,000.
The applicable tier depends on the value of your contracts and business volume. STS can help determine the tier and coordinate an eligible surety bond or other accepted security.
A surety bond premium is not the same as depositing the full bond amount. Underwriting, eligibility, and carrier terms apply.
Yes, if the business performs covered home improvement work in New Jersey. An out-of-state business must generally complete the same NJ HICB registration requirements before offering or performing covered work.
The business may also need a New Jersey Business Registration Certificate, insurance, required security, and any applicable municipal license or permit.

Yes. Jersey City requires a separate contractor license for certain non-state-licensed contractors and work on commercial property. Construction applications are handled through the City's permit portal, and some projects require zoning approval first.
Newark has a separate Building Contractor license for covered construction, alteration, repair, roofing, siding, moving, or demolition work requiring a city permit. The application may require entity documents, a New Jersey Business Registration Certificate, identification, and background-check materials.

Timing varies by registration, agency workload, insurance and security, municipal review, and missing items. A complete filing generally moves faster than one submitted with unresolved requirements.
Yes. STS can coordinate the Commercial General Liability, Workers’ Compensation, and HICB security or surety-bond requirements connected to the filing. Coverage and bonding are subject to underwriting, eligibility, and carrier terms.
