Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at sales@specialtradeservices.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Yes. You must show proof of completion of the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) RRP Course (Renovators, Remodelers, and Painters). This is an 8-hour course and is renewable every 5 years. We will schedule you for this course.

No. Nassau County does not require an applicant to take an exam for the home improvement contractor's license.

Yes! Nassau County requires proof of General Liability insurance. Workers' Compensation and Disability are required if you have any employees or use any subcontractors at the time of application. If you do not have any employees and you don't intend to use any 1099 workers or subcontractors, you may be exempt from the Workers' Comp and Disability insurance requirement.

No. Nassau County does not require a bond for the home improvement contractor's license., unless it becomes a condition of your approval.

In most cases, having criminal history does not disqualify you. If you've been convicted of a crime or offense and are concerned about your past don't sweat it. Just give us a call and we'll consult with you.

No, New York State does not have a license that covers the entire state. Each county has it's own license with their own set of rules and regulations. In some counties, there are certain towns or cities that have a separate license altogether like the City of Long Beach.

This one is a bit more complex. In order to qualify for a license in the city of Long beach you must first obtain a Nassau County license. However, you don't need to obtain a license in the City of Long Beach if you are working in other towns of Nassau County.

Nassau County defines your license and what type of work you may perform based on what classification (s) your General Liability insurance covers you for. For example, if you are covered under your insurance as a General Contractor then your license will show General Contractor. If your insurance shows that you are covered as painter only then you will be limited to painting work only on your license.

Although you will be told that the process takes 4-6 weeks if you ask the officials, after doing this for about 12 years we have never seen this happen. We typically see a turnaround time of 4-6 months with the fastest being recently at 3 months.
